Why Not End of Pipe Treatment?

  • These brines are highly concentrated – sometimes 4-5 times saltier than sea water
    • Ocean water contains about 35,000 parts per million (ppm) of total dissolved solids (salt)
    • Some food processing wastewater is up to 250,000 ppm
    • Water softener regenerant is up to 150,000 ppm
  • These relatively small volumes of brine are better handled at the source rather than polluting the entire volume of wastewater in the sewer system
  • SOURCE CONTROL IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN END-OF-PIPE TREATMENT
    • A smaller volume of water needs treatment
    • Typically, only involves 1 pollutant whereas at the wastewater treatment plant it now contains all kind of “contaminants” – thus offering the opportunity to recycle the salts
    • The salt doesn’t damage the pipes & pumps in the wastewater collection system
