Why Not End of Pipe Treatment?
- These brines are highly concentrated – sometimes 4-5 times saltier than sea water
- Ocean water contains about 35,000 parts per million (ppm) of total dissolved solids (salt)
- Some food processing wastewater is up to 250,000 ppm
- Water softener regenerant is up to 150,000 ppm
- These relatively small volumes of brine are better handled at the source rather than polluting the entire volume of wastewater in the sewer system
- SOURCE CONTROL IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN END-OF-PIPE TREATMENT
- A smaller volume of water needs treatment
- Typically, only involves 1 pollutant whereas at the wastewater treatment plant it now contains all kind of “contaminants” – thus offering the opportunity to recycle the salts
- The salt doesn’t damage the pipes & pumps in the wastewater collection system
