The summer heat and hot, hot temps make this season the perfect time to start an effort in household water conservation. You may not think it, but you probably waste water in some way, shape or form. They can also have a positive impact on our drinking water sources in the long run! After all, if we can each do our own part little by little, our state can surely improve our water resources and our water conservation efforts as a whole. Salt conservation in our environment is not the only thing we are passionate about. Try some (or all!) of the following initiatives around your household;
- Change when you water your landscaping. Watering at the right time of the day makes the best use of your water and you’ll use less in turn. Watering in the early morning is best when the air stays still and evaporation loss in minimal – it gives it a chance to soak into the soil. Avoid watering on windy days or at midday. If you have an auto-irrigation system, be sure the timing has been adjusted. Evenings are also good for watering when the temps have cooled down.
- Monitor leaks in your home and outside. Check hose connections and inspect washers, spigots, toilets, sinks and so on. Try the toilet test! Put a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet into your toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl, your tank is leaking, silently wasting up to 100 gallons of water a day. Whoa!
- Collect the rain. Collect rain runoff in rain barrels for fast and easy collection. You can use the water for your watering needs.
- Irrigate your yard or garden using slopes. You can adjust the water runoff for better efficiency.
- Know the type of soil you have. Make sure your soil is absorbing water and not leading to more runoff.
- Re-use your water inside. This one takes a little planning, but we love the idea of collecting household water from dehumidifiers or air conditioners, putting it in a bucket and using it for irrigation. Do not recycle water with bleach, fabric softener or detergents, however.
- Mulch your soil.
- Mow at the proper times and at the proper height. This will increase water absorption.
- Shorten your showers! We know how nice they feel, but if you can shorten the time, you decrease water waste. Experts say that trimming just two minutes off your shower can save up to 1,750 gallons of water per person in your household each year. Great news!
- Use a dishwasher if you have one. Hand-washing your dishes can use up to 27 gallons of water, compared to just 3 gallons for an energy-efficient dishwasher.
- Cover the pool so the water doesn’t evaporate.
- Go to the car wash rather than washing at home.

As summer carries on, the average household water consumption more than doubles, mostly due to landscape irrigation. You can help save water right there at home. Small changes can sometimes make a big difference. Saving water helps towns and cities protect against drought. It can also help save you time and money.
